I Thought We Were Selling Shirts

When I first started BTRU, I thought we were selling shirts.

Like most founders, I focused on the product. The designs. The materials. The printing process. The apparel itself.

But after spending months in the field talking to people, selling shirts, and collecting feedback, something became impossible to ignore.

The people who connected with BTRU weren’t connecting with apparel first.

They were connecting with what it represented.

The shirt was simply the vehicle.

The real connection was happening through the philosophy.

When someone heard that BTRU stood for “Be The Real You,” the conversation changed. When they understood that the brand was built for people pursuing difficult goals and staying committed to their vision, they leaned in.

The shirt wasn’t creating the meaning.

The meaning was creating the value.

This realization changed how I think about branding.

Most people believe products create movements.

In reality, movements create products.

The strongest brands in the world don’t just sell items. They give people a way to express who they are.

That’s what the field has been teaching me.

BTRU isn’t becoming a clothing brand.

It’s becoming a symbol for builders.

And we’re just getting started.
